PUTTING

Putting can make or break your game when you play internet golf games.

Get connected here, if you want a free online golf game. In fact you can get 3 of the best available free golf games:

Just like real golf courses, the greens on these internet golf games have sloped surfaces. Dips and rises effect how golfers must play their putts.

Here are some principals to keep in mind:

On a plain flat green you could simply hit the ball straight at the cup.

However putting, real and vitual, is more interesting and challenging than that.

For uphill putts you must hit the ball a little harder, and for downhill a bit softer.

When the green in your internet golf game slopes higher on the left or right, then you have to aim your putt to the higher side so that it will curve and roll downhill to the cup.

And sometimes you miss the cup on these tricky putts. Being aware of that possibility, golfers play for postion. You want to shoot for the cup, but not leave yourself bad in case of a miss. Try to leave the ball close to and uphill from the cup.

To make it even more interesting and realistic, when you play a golf game online, you may have to putt the ball up a rise that then slopes off downhill. Maybe with a right or left drift as well. What you do here is called "Read the break".

The break being the point where your putt starts curving toward the cup.

That break point becomes your target, and hitting it right makes for a great putt.

How to read the greens

In these internet golf games, like in real golf, to read the green means to see the contours and undulations that effect your putts.

1 - The GoldenFairway computer golf game has 2 tools for reading the greens.

1) Standard Grid - Breaks and steps in the horizontal grid lines indicate right or left sloping.

2) Directional Pole - You place the red and white pole where you would like to hit the ball. When on the greens the front-to-rear and right-to-left slopes, of that part of the green directly under the pole, are displayed.

This is useful because you can move the pole around to determine the best path for your putt. Then you set the pole at the break point and putt with enough power to reach the cup.

In the Novice Mode of this online golf game, the shot strength indicator approximates the power needed to hit the ball to the pole. It is a very general guide that tends to err on the strong side. So especially with uphill and downhill putts, you need to use your own best judgement.

Examples for this GoldenFairway internet golf game :

** Say the cup is mildly uphill, 8 yards away, and the green is sloping gently to the right...Move the directional pole out to about 9 yards (gives you a better shot strength on the shot disk) and a little to the left of the cup (compensates for the right drift).

** With 3 to 10 yard downhill putts, go by the pole's digital distance indicator to guage your shot strength. In these tight quarters the visual pole position is misleading.

2 - Shot-Online computer golf game uses a sort of dynamic grid. The greens' rises and falls are shown with bright segments of the grid lines that flow downhill. The grid in this game gives you the slopes in all 4 directions.

When shooting for the break, just aim your putt at it and directly adjust the shot strength as you hit the ball.

3 Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 golf demo - uses the standard grid with stepping indicating sloped areas of the greens.

Using the mouse-motion swing, aim at your break point and adjust the putt strength accordingly.

You can see, that of the 3 internet golf games, we are most familiar with the GoldenFairwayFX game. But because of the quality of Shot-Online golf, I am all over it, and will be able to post more about it soon.

If you have anything to share about these or any other internet golf games , please let me know and I will thank you and pay it forward.
