Free golf games like GoldenFairway let players choose the golf club that they want to use for each shot.

While an appropriate club is provided in Novice Mode, beginners can still experiment and try other clubs.

At higher levels of skill and competition, you need to be able to make good club choices.

Club Selection

Out on your local golf course, club selection has a lot to do with which clubs are actually working best for you. From your last round of golf, and maybe from time you spend on the driving range before playing, you have a feel for your tendencies. How the ball has been flying for you is an important factor in your club selection.

With online golf games like GoldenFairway and UTour, you will have tendencies too. When playing virtual golf, direct adjustments to effect trajectory and loft are made prior to hitting the ball.

And, when you shoot the ball, your swing plays a big part in the golf ball's flight.

In real life, you seek the best combination of accuracy and distance. You must consider your own swing mechanics, based on individual size, strength and flexibility.

A balance must be reached, because maximizing either distance or accuracy, generally sacrifices a bit of the other.

Best Distance

At the Tee, increase your distance by choosing a club that is longer, lighter, and with a more flexible shaft.

In the GoldenFairway and Utour free golf games, club length is a definite factor. The Woods have a longer distance rating, and are even visibly longer clubs.

Best Accuracy

For greater accuracy, choose a club with the opposite characteristics - shorter, heavier, less flex in the shaft.

In addition, higher lofted Drivers produce straighter shots for many players. The higher loft imparts greater backspin on the ball, helping it go straighter but shorter.

Accuracy is also effected by how well the ball is hit. Ideally, the ball is launched from the area in the center of the club face, called its Sweet Spot. Golf balls that are struck in this Sweet Spot, tend to go straight. The closer, you hit the drive, to the center of the club face, the straighter the shot.

Larger club heads give you not only a larger sweet spot, but also less twist on off-center hits. This too helps produce a more accurate shot. So a larger sized club head helps you hit the ball straighter.

The trade-off being less distance due to the increased weight. The heavier club head can slow your swing, decreasing the power of your stroke.

Distance and Accuracy Online

As for the online free golf games, trajectory and shot shape adjustments represent the effects or physics of these off-line maneuvers.

In GoldenFairway, players make adjustments to Loft and to Slice and Hook.

Standard Set

Just like in real regulation golf, players of the higher quality free golf games like GoldenFairway and UTour, can carry 14 clubs.

The Standard Set is comprised of:

Woods #1, #3 and #5

Irons #3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and Pitching Wedge

Putter

And 2 other clubs of the player's choice, according to preference and need. In the GoldenFairway free golf games, those 2 clubs are the #4 Wood and the Sand Wedge.

Club Basics

- The Putter is usually for up to 30 yards from the Cup.

- The higher the club's number, the higher is its loft, and generally the shorter its length.

- Woods are used mostly for shot distances greater than about 200 yards.

- Irons are for shots within about 200 yards of the Green. The closer you are to the Green, the higher the number of the iron that you use.

- Wedges - Wedges are specialty irons used for shots of less than 100 yards.

- Increased shot control and shot shaping are the goals of Wedge blade design.

- The Pitching Wedge is the highest lofted Iron in the Standard Set, and conversely, has the lowest loft of the Wedges. Its loft is in the neighborhood of 48 degrees.

- Wedge lofts generally increase in increments of 2 to 4 degrees.

- Average loft figures are 48, 52, 56, 60, and 64 degrees, corresponding to the Pitching Wedge, Approach Wedge, Sand Wedge, Lob Wedge and High Lob Wedge.

- In addition, the Pinemeadow Wedge from PinemeadowGolf.com has what they call their Last Wedge, which has 68 degrees of loft.

- Getting good with your Wedges is extremely helpful, both to your online golf play and especially to your real-life golf success.

Back to Free Golf Games

Click for my page about controlling the slice when you play this online game The following chart, for both the free version and the competitive GoldenFairway golf games, shows the maximum distance of each club, without wind effect or the use of Power Shot (Mojo Juice, which can increase your distance by 40%, costs 5 eGolf balls, and can be used twice every six holes) The lie of the ball, the slope of the terrain, and the wind all effect the power of the shot.

On a level fairway or green, the maximum club distance can be achieved with a perfect shot.

- Chip Shots are used to escape from a bad lie by using a shot with low trajectory and short distance.

- You will notice that in GoldenFairway free golf games, and elsewhere in the golf universe, golf clubs have names as well as numbers.
